STAUNTON - It seems this year there's just one election after the next. Once you're done with one, you're gearing up to hit the polls for another.

U.S. Rep. Bob Goodlatte, R-6th, delivers a speech at the end of the Buena Vista Labor Day parade on Sept. 7.

Tuesday is the Republican Primary for the U.S. House Of Representatives.

What does this mean?

For us, it means we're voting on the 6th District.

The 6th District encompasses Amherst, Augusta, Bath, Bedford, Botetourt, Highland, Page, Roanoke, Rockbridge, Rockingham, Shenandoah and Warren counties and the cities of Buena Vista, Harrisonburg, Lexington, Lynchburg, Roanoke, Staunton and Waynesboro.

There are two people vying for the Republican spot this year in the 6th District — the incumbent U.S. Rep. Bob Goodlatte and newcomer Harry Griego, a U.S. military veteran.

Not a Republican? It doesn't matter. Virginia is an open primary state, where residents are not required to register or cast their vote by party affiliation.

Whoever wins this primary will face the 6th District Democratic nominee, Kai Degner.

Degner officially accepted the 6th District Democratic Committee's nomination last week after the former nomination, Warren County Democrat Tom Howarth, withdraw due to health reasons.
