Near Record Turnout in SD 7

A high-stakes contest on Tuesday drew the attention of more than one-quarter of registered voters in Virginia Beach and Norfolk, a near-record voter turnout for a state Senate special election. The victory by Democrat Aaron Rouse will give Senate Democrats a 22-18 majority.

Special Election Turnout

Note: Share of registered voters that cast a ballot in contested special elections for Virginia Senate districts since 2000. Excludes elections held on the same date as a November general election.

* Turnout in SD7 is preliminary. The final voter percentage is expected to rise slightly on Friday, as a relatively small number of provisional and postmarked mail ballots will be considered.
